Calligraphy. The ancient Greeks called it “beautiful letters.” It also has been described as "the art of giving form to signs in an expressive, harmonious and skillful manner." Such writing has a place in both sacred and secular writings, with irregularity of character size, style and colors adding meaning. Calligraphy was originally done using pens and water-based ink. In this two-week series on August 8 and 15 at Prairiewoods (120 East Boyson Road in Hiawatha), Rita Heires, FSPA, will teach a more accessible approach, using felt-tipped pens readily available at office supply and other stores. In just two one-and-a-half-hour sessions, she will take you through the strokes and spaces to teach printing and scripts. You will learn the basics, from which you can flourish and develop your own particular style. You will learn to pen cards, signs and posters. The cost is $15 for the two-week series and includes calligraphic pens and paper. You will take home a black calligraphic pen and personal finished artwork. Registration is requested by Friday, August 3. For more information or to register, contact Prairiewoods at 319-395-6700 or www.Prairiewoods.org.
