The Cedar Rapids Area Convention & Visitors Bureau Advocates for the Community
The staff and board of the Cedar Rapids Area CVB have been busy serving as an advocate on behalf of the community, the bureau and the travel industry.
On Feb. 3, board member, Vicki Hughes, joined Mary Lee Malmberg, sports tourism director, to participate in the Travel Federation of Iowa (TFI) 2009 Legislative Showcase. The event, which featured TFI’s 2009 Legislative Session Priorities, was very successful with 71% of all state legislators in attendance.
Mary Lee and Vicki handed out horseshoe-shaped chocolates to nearly two-thirds of the members of the House and Senate. The horseshoes were to remind legislators that the state’s Sports Authority funding helped attract the 2010 International Horseshoe Pitchers Association Championships.
President Tim Boyle was one of 52 Corridor representatives who made the annual trip to Washington, sponsored by the Chambers of Commerce of Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. The contingent met with the staff members from the offices of Senators Harkin and Grassley and Congressman Loebsack to encourage federal action on flood recovery and economic development in the Corridor.
Tim spoke with Senators John McCain, John Kerry and Evan Bayh regarding Cedar Rapids area issues. He also met with the Destination Marketing Association, based in DC.
Wednesday, February 18 is Cultural Advocacy Day at the Capitol. Jessica Palmer, director of marketing and research, will be attending with a group of Iowa Cultural Corridor Alliance (ICCA) delegates to discuss priorities with legislators.
On Monday, February 23, Young Professionals of Iowa will meet in Des Moines for the third annual YP Day at the Capitol. Jessica will be showcasing the Cedar Rapids area, highlighting quality of life and opportunities that attract future workforce and visitors to our community.
